Why a Stylist Says Not Today to Your Inspo Photo
Share
That 'not today' stings when you brought a saved photo and a plan. At Oh Baby Salon in Bloomington, it means your hair can't safely make that jump in one sitting. It doesn't mean never.
Color often takes more than one visit, and we explain why in Why Hair Color Sometimes Takes More Than One Visit. The hardest part is the moment in the chair when we have to say it out loud.
Why won't my stylist do my inspo photo today?
A stylist says not today when your photo needs more change than your hair can safely take in one visit. The usual causes are old color, a starting shade much darker than the photo, or hair that is already stressed. Sometimes the photo itself hides how the look was made. Not today means a plan in stages. It doesn't mean never.
We look at your hair in good light before we decide anything. These are the four things we see most.
- Old color in your hair. Box dye is permanent pigment, and it stacks. Every round adds another layer, and those layers don't lift evenly. Lightener works through dark pigment in stages, so old dye can leave patchy, warm spots mid-process. A toner can adjust tone. It cannot erase leftover dye.
- Your starting depth. A soft, sunny blonde on dark brown hair means lifting through many levels. Every level of lift stresses the hair. Push all of it into one sitting and hair can turn stretchy, then snap.
- Hair condition. Dry ends, past lightening, heat damage. Hair like this can't take another big chemical service until it recovers. We protect the hair first, because color only looks good on hair that holds together.
- The photo itself. Lighting, filters, editing, and extensions all change what you see. The person in the picture may also have thicker hair, or hair that started much lighter than yours. The photo shows the result. It doesn't show the starting point.
What do we do instead when the answer is not today?
We give you a plan, not a closed door. Significant color changes here start with a consultation. That is true across our haircut, color, and styling services, and it is where the work on your inspo photo begins.
It goes the way it always does. We say, let's see your inspo picture, and then we ask you to tell us about your hair. We want your whole color history, including the box color from two years ago that you've half forgotten. We look at your hair in good light and feel its condition from roots to ends.
Then we lay out the options. Which one fits depends on your hair, not on the picture.
- Start the change today. Sometimes part of the look is safe now, such as the first stage of lightening or a tone refresh. We do that and tell you exactly what comes next.
- Choose a nearer version. Often there is a softer take on your photo that your hair can handle today. It gets you moving in the right direction without a gamble.
- Prepare first. Sometimes the best first appointment is a trim and a care plan, so the next visit starts on stronger hair.
It may take a couple of visits to get to your hair goals. We would rather say that in the consult than let you leave surprised.
In our chairs, we tend to see the next stage land about six to eight weeks later. Strong hair usually sits closer to the low end. Hair that needs recovery time sits closer to the high end. That is a planning range from our own experience, not a promise.
Plan for the time in the chair, too. In our experience, balayage alone can take two to four hours, which we break down in how long balayage takes. A multi-visit plan means setting that time aside more than once.
Lived-in blonde is a specialty of ours, and a lot of that work is built in stages. You can see how it looks on our Instagram.
What do people get wrong about hearing no?
The biggest mistake is hearing a judgment on your hair or your taste. It's neither. It's a read on where your hair is right now and how far the photo is from there.
The second mistake is shopping for a yes. Another salon may say yes to the same picture, and we understand the pull. But a rushed lift usually costs a shorter haircut and a longer road back. We would rather slow down than risk hair that breaks.
The third is a head start at home. A drugstore bleach kit or another round of box color, bought to get closer first, almost always makes the job harder. We can't see what went into the hair. Unknown product is the hardest thing to work around, so leave it alone and let us see what's there.
Sometimes the answer is a gentler plan. Sometimes it's to wait. Either way, it's the truth.
How can you get ready for your consultation?
Bring photos, bring your color history, and leave your hair alone until we see it. A little prep makes the first visit far more useful.
- Save several photos, not one. Choose three or four that show the tone and placement you love. Add one photo of a look you don't want.
- Write down your color history. List every box color, gloss, and semi-permanent shade you can remember, with rough dates. Snap a photo of the box if you still have it.
- Hold off on new color. Skip any at-home dye or bleach before the visit, so we see your hair as it is.
- Match your photo to a stylist. Look at the work of each person on our team and choose the one whose style fits your photo.
Done right, you leave with a clear plan and a realistic picture of the road, not a surprise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you do part of my inspo picture today?
Yes, often. If part of the look is safe in one visit, like a tone refresh or the first stage of lightening, we do that. We'll also tell you plainly what the next visit would cover.
Do I need a consultation for a big color change?
Yes. For significant color changes and for hair extensions, we ask for a consultation first. It lets us build a plan around your own hair history and goals instead of a one-size plan.
Does a not today mean my hair is damaged?
No. Healthy hair can still need stages if it has old color in it or the photo sits several levels away. If your hair does need recovery time, we'll say so and show you what we see.
How many visits will it take?
It depends on your starting color, your color history, and the condition of your hair. Some changes take a couple of visits. We would rather give you a clear read in the consultation than a number we can't keep.
Can I bring a photo of someone with different hair than mine?
Yes, and we encourage it. The photo shows us the tone and placement you love. We translate that to your texture, your density, and your starting point.
Should I color my hair at home before my consultation?
No. Another round of box color or a bleach kit usually means a longer plan to reach your photo. Come in with your hair as it is, and bring the box if you still have it.
