What Should You Expect at a Haircut Appointment?
Share
A haircut in Bloomington at Oh Baby Salon starts with a conversation, not the shears. We ask about your hair and look at your inspo picture. Then we wash, cut, check the shape wet and dry, and style it before you leave.
That order sounds simple. It's also why a cut still looks like yours on an ordinary morning weeks later, not only in the salon mirror.
What are the six parts of a haircut appointment?
A haircut appointment at Oh Baby Salon in Bloomington has six parts. There's a consultation, a wash, the cut, a wet and dry check, a finish style, and a plan for your next visit.
Oh Baby Salon has been cutting hair in Bloomington since 2003, at our salon on Maloney Drive. We welcome guests from Normal and nearby towns across the area we serve.
Before you choose a time, you can read our story and browse each stylist's specialties on our team page. Some clients pick a stylist by specialty. Others ask us to match them. Either way works.
Why Does Every Haircut Start With a Consultation?
The consultation is where haircut mistakes can be stopped early, before a single section comes down.
We'll ask about your hair history, including past color, since colored hair can sit differently once it's cut. We'll ask what you loved about your last cut and what bugged you after a few weeks. We'll also ask how you style it on a normal morning. Blow dry every day? Air dry? Curl it? Up in a clip most days?
That answer changes the cut.
A shape built for a daily blow dry will frustrate you if you have five minutes before work. A shape built to air dry will look unfinished if you love a smooth, polished blowout. We need to know now, not guess.
Then comes our favorite part: let's see your inspo picture. We'll tell you plainly whether it suits your texture. If it needs adjusting, we'll show you what we'd change so it works on you.
No photo yet? Scroll through our Instagram before your visit and save a few cuts you like. Pictures of cuts you don't like help just as much. They tell us where the line is.
Growing out bangs? Mention it at the start, because it changes what we take off today. Face framing layers soften the in between stage. A light blend at the front often works better than a full fringe. If you'd like to talk it through first, reach us through our contact page.
How Do We Decide Which Cut Suits Your Hair?
A good haircut fits the hair on your head, not the hair in your photo. Every appointment on our haircut, styling and color page starts with a close look at four things: texture, face shape, density and growth pattern.
Texture
Fine, straight hair holds a blunt line differently than thick, curly hair. A shape that looks sharp in a photo can fall flat on your texture. Or it can take real effort every morning to recreate. Texture decides more than any trend does.
Face shape
Where a layer starts around your face changes what the eye lands on. So does where a bob stops near the jaw. We point it out in the mirror before we cut, so you can picture the result instead of hoping.
Blunt ends, soft ends, and layers
A blunt cut, with no texturizing at the ends, looks fullest and holds its outline longest. That suits fine, straight hair that needs the fullness. Softening the ends adds movement. That usually helps thicker or wavy hair with volume to spare. Layers change how the cut moves and how much natural texture shows once it dries.
None of these is better. They're tools.
The right one depends on what your hair does on its own. We'll explain which we're using and why, in plain words, before we start.
Density and growth pattern
A strong natural part, a cowlick at the crown, or hair that grows fast on top all change how a cut settles. You won't see it on day one. You'll see it a few weeks later, when one side starts lifting. A stylist who skips these questions is cutting for today's photo. We cut for the hair you wake up with next month.
How Is Curly Hair Cut Differently From Straight Hair?
Curly and straight hair need different cutting approaches, and the difference shows up weeks later.
Straight hair shows every line. We usually cut it wet, in clean sections, so a line that's even at the sink stays even once it dries. Weight comes out from inside the shape rather than off the ends. That keeps the outline crisp while the hair still moves. If we want softness at the edges, it comes last, after the shape is set.
Curly hair works the other way. Curls shrink as they dry, and each one has its own spring. A length that looks right at the sink can bounce up shorter than you planned. That's why we often cut curls dry, or check the shape dry before we commit. We follow the curl pattern instead of forcing a straight line across it.
Placement matters too. Layers go where curls can stack on each other instead of spreading into a triangle. Take out too much weight and curls frizz. Leave too much and they pull flat at the crown.
Wavy hair sits in between. We usually cut the outline wet and check the finish dry. Waves stretch under the weight of water and spring back as they dry, so both views count.
What Happens in the Chair, Start to Finish?
Every haircut at Oh Baby Salon follows the same six steps, from the first question to the finished style.
- Start with the consultation. We talk through your goals, your hair history and your routine. Done right, you both agree on the plan before anything is cut.
- Wash and prep. Your hair gets a proper wash, with a little scalp massage at the sink.
- Cut to the plan. Your stylist works section by section, checking length, weight and balance as they go.
- Check it wet and dry. Hair looks different dry, so the shape gets checked both ways before anyone calls it finished.
- Style the finish. We blow dry, curl or style it the way you'll wear it, so you see the real shape.
- Plan the next visit. Before you go, we'll suggest when to come back and anything to change at home.
What Does a Haircut Include?
Every haircut on our Service Menu includes a scalp massage, a blowout, and a styling lesson. That means you see the finished shape styled before you leave, and you learn how to recreate it at home. Curly and wavy hair get the same steps, with a cut shaped to your pattern and a dry check. If you want a polished style for an event, the menu lists special occasion up and down styles separately.
What Do People Get Wrong About Getting a Haircut?
One mistake we see is choosing a stylist on price alone. Current pricing for every service lives on our service menu.
Another one we see often is a photo of a blunt, one-length bob for tight curls. That shape is built for straight or wavy hair. On curls, the same length can spring up short and round as it dries. We'll say so before cutting and suggest a version built for your curl pattern.
Waiting too long, then expecting one visit to fix it, is another. When a cut goes a long time between visits, it often loses its shape, not just its ends. The weight drops. The layers grow into each other. The ends need more than a tidy up.
Rebuilding that shape may take more than one visit, and we tell you that up front.
The last one is an old photo of yourself. Hair density and even face shape shift over the years. A cut that worked back then may sit differently now. That's not a criticism. It's how hair changes, and the consultation catches it.
How Often Should You Get a Haircut, and What Helps Between Visits?
How often to come back depends on your cut. Shorter, precise cuts show growth sooner, and longer layers can often stretch further between visits. Your stylist will suggest a timing before you leave.
You cannot product your way out of a trim. Healthy looking ends come from a steady haircut schedule, and no bottle replaces that. Between visits, though, the right routine protects the shape.
- Apply a heat protectant before every blow dry or curl.
- Choose a gentle, color-safe shampoo if your hair is highlighted or colored.
- Dry your hair the way your stylist showed you, since the cut was built around that finish.
- Ask which Oribe styling and care products fit your hair. We carry Oribe in the salon, and we match you to one product that works instead of sending you home with four.
Extensions need home care and regular visits to stay natural. We carry Christian Michael hair. You can learn more on our hair extensions page. Extensions start with a consultation, so we can customize a plan for your specific hair goals.
When your ends start doing their own thing, book your next haircut before the shape slips further.
What Is a Visit Here Like Beyond the Cut?
Some guests pair a cut with nail services from one of our nail techs, or a visit with our esthetician.
You can see how clients describe their visits on our reviews page. We tell you plainly what to expect.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a haircut appointment take?
Our Service Menu lists the time for each haircut, and long, thick hair or a big change can take longer. Your stylist will tell you what to plan for when you book.
Do I need a consultation before every haircut?
Yes. Even a simple trim starts with a short conversation about what's changed since your last visit. Skipping it is how a cut ends up shorter or heavier than you pictured.
How often should I get a haircut?
Your stylist will suggest a schedule based on your cut. Waiting a long time between visits can turn a quick trim into a rebuild.
What should I bring to my haircut appointment?
Bring inspo pictures of cuts you like and cuts you don't. Also bring an honest answer about how much time you spend styling. That lets your stylist plan a shape for your mornings, not just your photo.
Can a new stylist recreate a cut I loved somewhere else?
Yes. In most cases, a clear photo and notes on what worked give your stylist plenty to start from. Your hair has grown and shifted since then, so expect small adjustments during the wet and dry check.
Does it matter which stylist cuts my hair?
Yes. Each stylist on our team has different strengths, and the right match makes everything easier. Browse our team page to see each stylist's specialties, or ask us to match you.
Why doesn't my cut look the same when I style it at home?
Usually it's the drying, not the cut. A shape finished with a round brush falls differently when it air dries. Tell us how you dry it at home, and we'll cut and show you a finish that fits.
How do I get through growing out bangs?
Face framing layers and a new part help the growth blend in sooner. We can also show you a couple of ways to pin them back during the awkward weeks. Mention it at the start of your visit so your stylist cuts toward the grow out.
