What Happens at a Hair Extension Consultation?

You've saved the inspo pictures and you know you want more length or fullness. Before anything is placed at Oh Baby Salon in Bloomington, we sit down together and look closely at your hair.

We require a consultation for every extension client, and we see it as a benefit, not a hurdle. It's how we customize a plan for your specific hair goals. The full picture of how hair extensions work here lives on our hair extensions page.

What happens when you come in for an extension consultation?

At an extension consultation, your stylist looks at your hair before planning anything. We feel how much hair you have where extensions would sit and how each section handles tension. We ask about your color history and how you wash and style. Then we pick a method, talk through home care, and set your move-up schedule. If your hair needs work first, we tell you.

Here is the order we usually go in:

  1. Tell us about your hair. We ask what you've done to it, including any box color, and what has frustrated you before.
  2. Show us your inspo picture. Let's see it, and we'll tell you honestly what's possible and what isn't safe for your hair yet.
  3. Let us feel your hair. We check how much you have at the spots where extensions would sit, and how each section handles a little tension.
  4. Describe your week. How often you wash, how much you heat style, and whether you live in a high ponytail all change the method we suggest.
  5. Talk through the methods. We weigh hand tied and K-tip against everything we just learned about your hair.
  6. Set the plan. That covers your method, your home care routine, and the schedule for your move-ups.

None of this is a test you can fail. It's information. The more honest you are, the better the plan.

What is your stylist feeling for, section by section?

Your stylist is checking two things with their hands: how much hair grows in each area, and how strong those strands are. Few heads are even. In our experience, the nape, the sides, and the crown often carry different amounts of hair on the same person.

At the nape, we look at whether there's enough hair to cover the placement once it's in. Extensions need your own hair lying over them to look natural. At the crown, we watch where your hair parts and falls. A placement has to sit below that part without peeking through.

We also give small sections a light tug. Hair that stretches and springs back is different from hair that stretches and stays. That tells us how much weight each section can share.

Then we check the placement line itself. That's the row or the spots where extensions would attach. For hand tied, we feel along that line for enough hair to anchor the row comfortably. For K-tip, we check that each small section could hold a bond without being overloaded.

It takes patience. We don't rush this part.

Why does fine or fragile hair change the plan?

Every extension pulls on the natural hair holding it, so fine or fragile hair has less to share the load. Thin strands, hair that has been lightened, and years of box color can all make hair weaker than it looks in the mirror.

Weak is not the same as ruined, and we never treat it that way. But we can't see strength from across the room. We have to handle your hair, section by section.

When a section can't comfortably hold the weight, we have three honest options. We can choose a different method. We can start with a trim or a color plan first. Or we can wait. Health always comes first, and we want you to love your hair for the long haul.

Box color adds its own wrinkle. Our post on why hair color sometimes takes more than one visit explains the same logic. It may take a couple of visits to get to your hair goals, and we'd rather tell you that at the consultation than after the install.

How do we choose between hand tied and K-tip?

We choose the method by how your hair carries weight, how you wear it, and how much upkeep fits your life. Hand tied extensions sit in a thin row close to the head, so the weight is shared along that row. K-tip extensions attach one strand at a time, each bonded to a small section of your own hair with a keratin tip.

For the full side-by-side, our post "Six Questions That Decide Hand Tied or K-Tip Hair Extensions" goes deeper. In the chair, the decision usually comes down to three things. How much hair you have where extensions would sit. Whether you wear your hair up often. And how much upkeep you'll keep up with.

We offer both methods, so the choice follows your hair, not our schedule. Two clients can bring the same inspo picture and leave with different methods. That's the consultation working.

What does the home care conversation cover?

The home care conversation covers how you'll wash, style, and protect your extensions between visits. Extensions are a maintenance relationship. Most of that relationship happens at your sink, not ours.

We ask how often you wash now, and whether that's likely to change. We ask about heat: a daily flat iron, a curling wand on weekends, or mostly air drying. We ask about ponytails, gym days, and anything else that puts tension on your hair.

Then we talk products. We carry Oribe for styling and care, and we'll walk through a routine that suits your hair and your extensions. High-end home care is how you keep that salon-fresh look and protect the health of your own hair.

If the routine doesn't fit your life, say so. We'd rather adjust the plan now than watch it get skipped.

How is your move-up schedule set, and what do you leave with?

Your move-up schedule is set together at the consultation, based on your method, your hair, and how you wear it. As your hair grows, the extensions move away from the scalp. A move-up brings them back where they belong.

Move-ups are part of the plan from day one, not something we spring on you later. We're honest about that commitment before you say yes. It's part of how we under-promise and over-deliver.

You leave the consultation with a clear plan in hand. Your method, your home care routine, and your move-up schedule. If you'd like to think it over first, that's fine.

What should you bring, and who will you meet?

Bring your inspo picture, an honest color history, and your questions. Tell us about any box color, even the one you'd rather forget. It changes what we can do, and it never changes how we treat you.

Also think about how you wear your hair on a normal day. Ponytail, down, heat styled, air dried. That detail does more for the plan than most clients expect.

We'd love to help you find the right stylist for your hair goals, and our online stylist quiz is a good place to start. You can meet the people behind the chairs on our team page. Each stylist here has their own areas of focus. A Google review from one of our clients said it this way: "each of the ladies that work there have great skills in their chosen areas of focus."

You can see real installs on our Instagram, which is a good way to see our work before you walk in. We've been doing hair in Bloomington since 2003, and you'll find us at 2415 Maloney Drive. Our Bloomington salon page has the rest of our story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a consultation before getting hair extensions?

Yes. We require a consultation for every extension client. It lets us see your hair in person, hear your goals, and build a plan before anything is placed.

Can I get extensions if my hair is fine?

Often, yes, but it depends on whether your hair can carry the weight where the extensions would sit. In our experience, fine hair does best when we choose the method around it, not the other way around. We check in person at your consultation.

What if my hair isn't ready for extensions?

We'll tell you plainly. If your goal isn't safe for your hair yet, we explain why and what we can do today, which might be a trim, a color plan, or waiting. We'd rather be honest than risk damage.

What should I bring to my extension consultation?

Bring your inspo picture and be ready to talk about your color history, including box color. Think about how you wash, style, and wear your hair most days. The more we know, the more useful your plan will be.

How do I find out what extensions will cost?

The cost depends on the method, the amount of hair, and your move-up schedule. We walk through what drives it at your consultation. Current pricing lives on our service menu.
