How Often Do Hair Extensions Need a Move-Up Appointment?

Your extensions stay right where we placed them. Your own hair keeps growing underneath, and week by week the attachment drifts away from your scalp. A move-up brings it back.

At Oh Baby Salon in Bloomington, we install hand-tied and K-tip extensions from the full Christian Michael line. Each method runs on its own schedule.

How Often Do You Need a Move-Up Appointment?

In our chairs, hand-tied extensions usually need a move-up every seven to nine weeks, and K-tip extensions usually go nine to twelve weeks. Your own hair growth sets the schedule, since the attachment stays put while your hair grows out beneath it. That's what we tend to see here. Your stylist will confirm the timing that's right for your hair.

The reason is simple. Your hair grows about half an inch every month, with extensions or without. The attachment doesn't travel with it. So the gap between your scalp and the attachment point widens a little every week.

Past a certain point, two things happen. The weight of the extension slides farther down the strand instead of resting near the root. The line where your hair meets the attachment also starts to show.

Growth varies across the head, too. In our chairs, the crown often grows out faster than the nape. By the time you're due, the top rows may need a move-up more than the sides. That's normal. We check for it at every appointment.

Hand-Tied vs. K-Tip: Different Timelines

Hand-tied extensions usually need a move-up sooner than K-tip, but each hand-tied visit tends to run shorter.

Hand-tied wefts sit in a row sewn onto a track against your scalp. As your hair grows, the whole row shifts down and away from your part. It shows sooner. K-tip bonds are small and individual, so growth has to travel farther before anyone notices.

  • Hand-tied. Move-Up Window We Usually See: Every seven to nine weeks. Appointment Length We Usually Book: About an hour.
  • K-tip. Move-Up Window We Usually See: Every nine to twelve weeks. Appointment Length We Usually Book: Closer to two hours.

The trade-off runs both ways. K-tip goes longer between visits, but every bond gets repositioned one at a time. Hand-tied comes back sooner. The appointment moves quickly, though, since the whole row shifts as one piece. If you're still choosing between the two, our hair extensions page walks through how each method wears day to day.

Your growth rate matters more than the calendar. If you grow slowly, a hand-tied set can sometimes sit closer to nine weeks without trouble. If you grow fast, sleep on wet hair, or wear a tight ponytail daily, plan on the earlier end of your window. Tell your stylist how quickly your hair usually grows. They can read the gap at your next wash and blow dry and confirm your timing.

What Happens at a Move-Up Appointment

A move-up takes out the extensions you already wear, checks your hair underneath, and puts the same set back in higher. Nothing new goes in, so it moves faster than your first extension day. Here's the order once you're in the chair:

  1. We remove the old attachment points and set your extensions aside.
  2. We check your natural hair for tangling, matting, or tension near the root.
  3. We wash and condition your hair to clear buildup before anything goes back in.
  4. We reposition your same set higher up, close to your current root line.

From there we blend it out and blow dry it the way it fell on install day. It feels closer to a wash and style than a full extension day.

We're open until 8 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That makes an after-work move-up simple to fit around your day.

A few habits between visits make your window easier to hit:

  1. Dry your hair fully before bed instead of sleeping on it wet.
  2. Skip the tight ponytail most days, since it pulls on the same attachments over and over.
  3. Keep styling gentle for a day or two after a move-up, and give your scalp a break from heat while things settle.
  4. Check your part in the mirror every week or so for a gap starting to show.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long

Going a week or two past your window is rarely a problem, but waiting much longer invites matting at the attachment.

The attachment point gets the least airflow and the most friction. That's where matting starts. Left long enough, a mat like that sometimes can't be brushed out. It has to be cut.

Extensions that go through repeated late move-ups tend to need replacing sooner, too. The hair takes more stress each cycle than it should. We're five-time hair extension certified, and part of that training is spotting a set that needs attention early. We'd rather tell you now than clean up a bigger problem later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know it's time for a move-up?

A visible gap between your part and the attachment, or a slight pull at the root when your hair is up, means it's time. Either one is your cue to book. If you come in for color or a blow dry between visits, your stylist will often spot it first.

Can I stretch my move-up longer than usual?

Yes, sometimes. If your hair grows slowly or you wear mostly low-manipulation styles, a hand-tied set can sit at the far end of its window without trouble. We'll tell you plainly whether your hair can handle the wait, and it may take a visit or two to learn your growth pattern.

Does a move-up damage my natural hair?

No, not when it happens on schedule. Trouble shows up when a set sits well past its window and tension stays on the same section week after week. That's why we don't recommend skipping a move-up to save a visit.

How much does a move-up cost?

The cost depends on the method you're wearing and how much hair is involved. Exact pricing lives on our service menu, since numbers change. Your stylist can confirm your quote at the appointment.

Will a move-up appointment feel different from my first install?

Yes. It's shorter and simpler, since no new hair goes in. Your existing set gets washed, checked, and repositioned closer to your scalp.
